It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we, the Oromo Community of Minnesota, have received the heartbreaking news of the recent tragedy that claimed the lives of State Lawmaker Melisa Hortman and her beloved husband, and left our dear friends Sen. John Hofman and his wife seriously injured.
Melisa and John were not only trusted allies of the Oromo people; they proudly embraced the Oromo identity and stood alongside our community in the pursuit of justice, equality, and human dignity. Their compassion, unwavering commitment, and tireless advocacy for our people made them cherished members of our community. Melisa’s loss is a profound wound to us all, and our hearts ache for John as he recovers from this senseless act of violence.
In this time of collective grief, we extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of Melisa and her husband. We also offer our full support and prayers for healing to John and his wife during this incredibly difficult time. We share in your pain and honor the legacy of solidarity, love, and justice that Melisa lived—and that John continues to embody.
As we reflect on this tragedy, we reaffirm our belief in the strength of our community. We must not respond with despair, but with unity and purpose.
Let us remember Melisa and her husband not only for how they died, but for how they lived—with courage, conviction, and compassion. And let us lift up John and his wife with love and solidarity as they begin the long road of healing.
May their memory and resilience guide us. May their commitment continue to inspire.
